On the most holy days of the year, we traditionally read stories about three women in crisis. Each is profoundly in touch with her own grief, longing and uncertainty. In this mini-session, we'll spend time with Hannah, Hagar and Sarah (all featured in Rosh Hashanah’s Torah or Haftarah portions) exploring their stories through lenses of myth, literature, and meaning-making -- and asking how their complicated lives can help us understand our own. Creative midrash-making and re-interpretation in any form will be strongly encouraged!

What is the shape of Jewish time? When we look into the future, where are we looking and what do we see? Through the lenses of philosophy, Talmud, and our own deep Torah, we will explore these questions together. Whether predicting the Messiah, envisioning the flow of our tradition, or making sense of History, Jews have always had a deep interest in and practice of travelling through time. Sometimes literally, sometimes metaphorically, but always beautifully, these journeys have been recorded in our rich textual tradition. Join Rabbi Xava De Cordova as we dive into the vision of Rabbi Akiva, Walter Benjamin, and much, much more. No Hebrew knowledge is required, all you need is a curious spirit and your own brilliant insight!

God as Melekh, "King," is one of the most common metaphors for the Divine, and has been invoked in liturgy, blessings, and prayerful poetry throughout Jewish history--and particularly during the Days of Awe. But this image is both challenging to and scrutinized by feminist, queer, anarchist, egalitarian, and anti-imperialist approaches to Jewish tradition and practice. What can we glean from this metaphor as we attempt to deepen our relationship to the Sacred? What opportunities might this way of relating to the Unknowable offer us?

This course will lovingly and critically interrogate this sacred metaphor. We'll learn primarily through the modality of text study (in small groups and as a larger class), exploring texts that demonstrate the origins and evolutions of this metaphor. Our study will be inflected by several threads of halakhic literature (the discourse that surrounds Jewish action and practice) and liturgy--both received and recently innovated.

Whether you are committed to removing patriarchal images of God from the Jewish lexicon or you are a staunch advocate for God as King, your voice is welcome and appreciated!
