How is this Hanukkah different from all other Hanukkahs?
New Rules Judaism: Hanukkah ReCreation is a three-session workshop series (two sessions before the holiday and a sharing session after) designed to help you develop rituals and experiences that will make the holiday more powerful for you, your family, and your friends during this very strange pandemic Hanukkah, and beyond.
Sessions
Session 1: Overview and Picking Your Pieces
What is Hannukah for? Why do we celebrate this holiday? How do we want it to affect us? Do we want to feel changed by the experience, or is it a different kind of holiday? You will be introduced to a specific process for re-imagining and re-designing Jewish practices by linking today’s needs and aspirations with Judaism’s core values and wisdom. Begin to visualize a Hanukkah experience that truly moves you, brings you joy, or otherwise feels significant. Engage in a guided process to uncover the Jewish values and societal needs that most matter to you and that you would be most passionate about linking together in an annual ritual of bringing light to the darkness.
Session 2: Getting Practical and Picking Your Brains
Create your own Hanukkah rituals and plans. Move from vision to practicalities. In this session, you will work to turn the conceptual goals from the previous week into a specific set of activities for you (and any friends and family you will involve) to engage with during Hanukkah. You will have an opportunity to share your ideas and plans with the other members of this intrepid group of trailblazers. Feedback from others will help you put the finishing touches on your plan and enrich the experience for you and your family and friends. After this session, you will be ready to figure out what you need to prepare and procure in order to put your ideas into action.
Session 3: Looking Back and Looking Forward
When Hanukkah is done, we will gather together for celebration. We will share how it went and what we want to tweak for next year. We will also consider which ideas we may want to bring to the next holiday as we take our next step in re-building Judaism for our time.
