Marques Hollie: Judaism Unbound Episode 326 - Whose Canon is it Anyway?

Marques Hollie is a Philadelphia-based theatre artist, ritual leader, operatically-trained vocalist, and -- most importantly for this episode -- an ordained Maggid! What's a Maggid, you ask? That's a great question. It's SO great that we devoted much of this episode to it! Listen in to learn what a Maggid has been in the past, what it is today, and what it could become in the future.

[5] Hollie references a work of Jewish stories, entitled The Collected Stories of Moacyr Scliar. You can purchase it here, and you can learn more about Scliar by clicking here.

[6] A past episode of Judaism Unbound features Noam Sienna, and explores his book A Rainbow Thread: An Anthology of Queer Jewish Texts from the First Century to 1969, which Hollie referenced. You can purchase A Rainbow Thread via this link.

[7] For the “Alef Bet Pageant” story that Hollie alludes to, see this passage from the Zohar, a foundational text of Kabbalah, or find it in the book Jewish Stories One Generation Tells Another, by Peninnah Schram.

[8] Toward the end of the episode, Hollie and Lex each mention Kohenet as another role — like Maggid — with a rich history, that is being revived in the 21st century. For past episodes of Judaism Unbound exploring the role of Kohenet in greater depth, see Episode 240: Hebrew Priestesses - Jill Hammer, Taya Shere and/or Episode 246: Priestessing Priestesses - Keshira HaLev Fife.
