“Revolutions of the Souls”: a breathtaking Jewish vision of the cyclical nature of human existence, far more subversive and existentially meaningful than the easily dismissed “reincarnation” with which it is often confused.
“Revolutions of the Souls” is also a more accurate translation of the Hebrew term, gilgulei neshamot found in traditional texts.
Yes, the kabbalistic vision of Soul-Revolutions entails perpetual rebirth; but rather than for individuals, it concerns the infinite number of soul-sparks that compose our being, going forth to infinitely diverse bodies throughout history.
These rebirths transgress not only historical boundaries, but those of gender (“men” reborn as “women” and vice versa; individuals comprised of heterogeneously gendered soul-sparks); species (“human beings” reborn as trees, as stones, as animals); and so on.
Moreover, Soul-Revolutions are not limited to the moment of birth; rather, a spirit-guide may “revolve” within a person during their lifetime to aid them on their spiritual path; or, lamentably, an evil spirit may “revolve” within a person to lead them astray.
How do these visions change the way we think of our identities, our place in history, our relationship to nature?
How can we recognize, or conjure, the presence of spirit-guides within ourselves or ward off demonic tricksters?
How can we make Soul-Revolutions part of our spiritual practice, even part of our daily lives?
No background necessary, except for the experience of being human (or a palm tree).
